When I found out I was having triplets, everything I read about having triplets led me to expect: premature, very small, very fragile babies. I immediately looked into the carseat that would hold the teeniest of babies so that I could bring home my boys. Most carseats start at 5 lbs, so I sought out a carseat that started at 4 lbs, just in case I had to bring home a baby that small. And I did. I brought home Antonio at 5lbs, then Lawrence at 4.2lbs, and finally, at almost 3 weeks old I brought home Harris at 5.10lbs.
They were impossibly small in their little carseats even though these Graco 30s were made for teeny babies from 4 to 30 lbs.
Here's are the boys in their carseats on the way to their first doctors appointments. They were probably about 3 weeks old here. We had to put an insert in the carseat so he would be all snuggled in. I thought they would be in these carseats forever.
But, in a blink of an eye, these "preemies" outpaced all expectations and the other day as I got them ready to head off to a birthday party, I saw this:
No more need for the snuggly inserts. And my boys - who are between 19 and 23 lbs, and quickly outgrowing their carseats.
But! I still need to keep them in a rear facing seat, ideally until age 2. In my van (yes. I had to move to a van. Seriously - there is no alternative. It's an Odessey - or as my friend has dubbed it "the Oddesexy" - very cool) ... so, in my van, the set up requires me to put one of the boys in the way back 3rd row. This means, I have to have the kind of carseat that permits me to buckle the boy in, then lift him and snap him into his third row. I cannot have one of those permanent car seats because how in the heck do I get MYSELF and a baby into that 3rd row so I can buckle him in??!!
So, I was SO excited last week to be able to join a lovely group of women bloggers at a Graco event put on by the SITS girls where we all had an opportunity to learn about a new carseat the Graco SnugRide® Click Connect™ 40 carseat. What is great about this particular carseat is that it holds babies/kids up to 40 lbs unlike many snap and go carseats. This means that my GIANT babies can still get buckled and then lifted and clicked into the 3rd row for another year and a half (hopefully!).
I brought Harris to the party since he is my biggest guy. And he was an excellent model. Initially, he was a little squished as I learned to adjust the seat.
We figured out that the Simple SafeAdjust harness system allows me to adjust the headrest with one hand to fit babies height and give your child the best head protection. I'd never seen such an option and it worked great.
With the headrest adjusted, Harris spent the majority of the rest of the party comfortably accepting visitors and gifts. Here he is with all of his new little friend's angry birds.
The Graco Snugride Click Connect 40 is available in two fabric choices: Mena and Moonstruck. It retails for $219.99 and is available exclusively at Babies R Us. For more information and images of this car seat you can check out Graco Safety!
The American Academy of Pediatrics recently made the recommendation to keep all children in rear-facing car seats until the age of 2. Graco set out to make this product so parents can keep infants rear facing longer while still keeping them comfortable.
